The side eye meme is a popular internet reaction used to express suspicion, judgment, disbelief, or disapproval without saying a word. It usually features a person, animal, or animated character looking sideways with a skeptical expression. People share these memes when something seems awkward, questionable, embarrassing, or unexpectedly ridiculous.
From the iconic Side Eyeing Chloe reaction to TikTok’s viral “bombastic side eye” trend, this simple facial expression has become a recognizable part of internet humor. Its appeal comes from how easily it communicates emotions that people might hesitate to express directly.
What Does the Side Eye Meme Mean?
The side eye meme meaning depends on context, but it generally suggests that someone is silently questioning or judging something.
A side eye happens when a person looks toward someone or something without fully turning their head. The expression can communicate skepticism, annoyance, disbelief, or playful criticism.
In online conversations, it often means:
- Suspicion: Something seems strange or difficult to believe.
- Disapproval: Someone has behaved in a questionable way.
- Disbelief: A statement sounds ridiculous or surprising.
- Sarcasm: A situation deserves a humorous reaction.
- Awkwardness: Someone has created an uncomfortable moment.
For example, imagine a friend announcing that they will start studying only five minutes before an important exam. Responding with a side eye reaction GIF communicates your disbelief without requiring an explanation.
The meaning is not always negative. Friends frequently use the expression jokingly rather than as a serious criticism.
Where Did the Side Eye Meme Originate?
The expression “side eye” existed long before social media. According to Know Your Meme’s history of side eye, the phrase has appeared in English writing for centuries.
However, the internet transformed the familiar gesture into a widely shared reaction format.
Side Eyeing Chloe: The Iconic 2013 Meme
One of the most recognizable examples emerged in September 2013.
A YouTube video titled Lily’s Disneyland Surprise… AGAIN! captured two sisters reacting to their parents announcing a surprise Disneyland trip.
While Lily became emotional with excitement, her younger sister Chloe Clem gave a puzzled sideways glance.
A screenshot of Chloe’s expression spread across Tumblr and became known as the Side Eyeing Chloe meme.
The image worked perfectly as a reaction to confusing or unbelievable situations. It quickly inspired captions, GIFs, and edited images.
The meme’s documented history is available through Know Your Meme’s Side Eyeing Chloe entry.
What Is the Bombastic Side Eye Meme?
The bombastic side eye meme is an exaggerated variation of the traditional side eye reaction.
Instead of expressing mild suspicion, it communicates dramatic judgment or intense disbelief.
The popular catchphrase is:
“Bombastic side eye. Criminal offensive side eye.”
The words are intentionally exaggerated for comedic effect. “Criminal offensive” does not mean someone committed an actual crime. It humorously suggests that their behavior deserves an especially strong reaction.
How the TikTok Trend Started
In January 2023, a TikTok audio trend developed around creator Cynthia Mmasi’s humorous repetition of “side eye.”
A later variation popularized the bombastic side eye catchphrase. Creators combined the audio with facial expressions, funny situations, lip-syncing, and reaction videos.
According to Know Your Meme’s TikTok trend documentation, the audio became widely used in early 2023.
The dramatic delivery helped turn an ordinary facial expression into a recognizable internet catchphrase.
Popular Types of Side Eye Memes
The side eye reaction appears in several formats, each offering a slightly different comedic effect.
1. Side Eyeing Chloe Meme
Chloe’s classic expression communicates confusion and disbelief. It works especially well when someone reacts unexpectedly to an ordinary situation.
2. Bombastic Side Eye Meme
This version emphasizes dramatic judgment. TikTok creators frequently pair it with exaggerated facial expressions or unexpected behavior.
3. Cat Side Eye Meme
Cats are particularly popular subjects because their sideways glances can appear suspicious or unimpressed.
A cat side eye meme often accompanies captions about strange noises, interrupted naps, or someone approaching with an unwanted bath.
4. Dog Side Eye Meme
Dogs looking sideways while keeping their heads relatively still can appear guilty, nervous, or suspicious.
These images are frequently used for jokes about stolen food, broken household objects, or pets pretending they did nothing wrong.
5. Animated Character Side Eye Memes
Characters from cartoons and animated shows also appear in side eye reaction images.
Their exaggerated expressions allow creators to communicate skepticism, annoyance, or sarcastic humor in an entertaining way.
Why Did the Side Eye Meme Become So Popular?
The popularity of the side eye meme comes from its simplicity and versatility.
Unlike complicated internet jokes, the reaction requires almost no background knowledge. Someone looking suspiciously toward another person is easy to understand.
Several qualities make the format effective.
Universal expression: People recognize sideways glances across everyday social situations.
Relatable humor: The meme reflects familiar experiences involving embarrassing conversations, questionable decisions, and awkward interactions.
Easy customization: Creators can add captions, sound effects, or new characters without changing the underlying joke.
Short-form compatibility: A side eye can communicate the entire punchline in a few seconds, making it suitable for TikTok videos, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
The expression also works in private messages, where a reaction image can communicate more personality than a plain text response.
How to Use a Side Eye Meme in Conversations
The side eye meme is useful when you want to respond humorously without writing a long message.
Here are some relatable examples.
| Situation | Funny side eye caption |
| A friend makes an unbelievable excuse | “You really expect me to believe that?” |
| Someone eats your food without asking | “Interesting choice.” |
| A coworker claims they finished everything | “Did you actually finish it?” |
| A friend returns to a bad habit | “Here we go again.” |
| Someone tells an obvious lie | “That’s your final answer?” |
You can also communicate the expression through emojis, particularly the sideways-looking eyes emoji (👀), although that emoji can indicate curiosity or interest rather than judgment.
Context matters. A playful side eye between friends may be funny, while the same reaction in a serious conversation could seem disrespectful.
How to Create Your Own Side Eye Meme
Creating a side eye reaction meme requires only a suitable image and a relatable situation.
- Choose a reaction image: Select a person, pet, or animated character making a sideways glance.
- Add a short caption: Describe an awkward, suspicious, or humorous moment.
- Keep the text readable: Use clear lettering and avoid covering the facial expression.
- Match the emotion: A subtle glance works for mild skepticism, while an exaggerated expression suits dramatic humor.
- Share it appropriately: Post the meme on a suitable social platform or send it during a relevant conversation.
For videos, you can combine the image with a short reaction clip or suitable audio.
When using someone else’s photography, artwork, or viral video, consider copyright and permission requirements, particularly for commercial content.

Side Eye Meme vs. Bombastic Side Eye: What’s the Difference?
Although the two expressions share the same basic meaning, their intensity differs.
| Feature | Side Eye Meme | Bombastic Side Eye Meme |
| Main meaning | Suspicion or mild judgment | Exaggerated disapproval |
| Expression | Subtle sideways glance | Dramatic sideways glance |
| Humor | Dry or sarcastic | Loud and theatrical |
| Common format | Images, GIFs, reaction videos | TikTok audio and short videos |
| Typical situation | Something seems questionable | Something seems outrageously ridiculous |
Both formats communicate judgment, but bombastic side eye deliberately exaggerates the response for comedic effect.
Is the Side Eye Meme Still Relevant?
The side eye meme remains useful because it represents a familiar human expression rather than depending entirely on a single viral trend.
Although individual audio clips and image formats can rise and fade in popularity, people continue using sideways glances to communicate skepticism and humor.
The format can also evolve as new characters, animals, and creators produce distinctive reactions.
That adaptability makes side eye an enduring part of online reaction culture.
